Why You Need to Renew Your TDLR Lash License and How to Do It
If you’re a licensed lash artist in Texas, staying on top of your Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) license renewal is crucial. It’s not just a legal requirement—it’s also an opportunity to grow professionally and maintain the trust of your clients. This blog will break down the importance of renewing your lash license, the requirements needed, and how to make the process seamless.
Why Renewing Your Lash License Matters
- Stay Legally Compliant
Operating without a valid lash license in Texas can lead to fines and legal consequences. Renewing your license ensures you stay compliant with state regulations, keeping your career secure. - Maintain Professional Credibility
A valid license shows clients that you’re qualified and dedicated to providing safe, high-quality services. It builds trust and sets you apart from unlicensed practitioners. - Expand Career Opportunities
Many lash salons and beauty establishments require proof of licensure for employment. Renewing your license ensures you’re ready for new opportunities, whether it’s starting your own lash business or expanding into teaching and mentoring. - Stay Updated on Industry Standards
Continuing education, which is part of the renewal process, keeps you informed about the latest techniques, safety practices, and TDLR regulations. This knowledge benefits your clients and boosts your skills.
Requirements to Renew Your TDLR Lash License
Renewing your TDLR lash license is straightforward but requires attention to detail. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Complete the Required Continuing Education
- The TDLR requires lash artists to complete 4 hours of continuing education every two years.
- This typically includes:
- 1 hour on sanitation and health practices.
- 3 hours on other relevant topics, like lash extension techniques or Texas cosmetology laws.
- Submit a Renewal Application
- Log in to your account on the TDLR website.
- Fill out the online renewal form and double-check your information for accuracy.
- Pay the Renewal Fee
- As of now, the renewal fee for an Eyelash Extension Specialist License is $53.
- Ensure Compliance with Past Regulations
- If you’ve been fined or have unresolved compliance issues, you must address these before renewing your license.

What Happens If Your Lash License Expires?
You can still renew your license even if it has expired, but additional fees will apply. If your license has been expired for 90 days or less, you’ll owe 1.5 times the standard renewal fee, currently totaling $79.50. For licenses expired more than 90 days but less than three years, the fee doubles to $103. Regardless of how long your license has lapsed, you must fulfill all renewal requirements, including completing the required continuing education, when applying for reinstatement.
For licenses expired more than 18 months but less than three years, you’ll also need to submit the Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal form. This form requires you to explain the reason for the lapse, with options such as family death or serious illness, job loss, being out of the country, the birth or adoption of a child, or other circumstances.
If your license has been expired for more than three years, it cannot be renewed. In this case, you will need to reapply for a new license and meet all initial licensing requirements.
Don’t Let Your Career Be Put on Hold
Renewing your TDLR lash license is about more than just following rules—it’s a chance to reaffirm your professionalism, stay competitive, and continue growing as a lash artist.
Having a valid license safeguards you from specific lawsuits and liabilities. Additionally, a current license is required to obtain insurance and other essential forms of coverage. Clients also expect you to maintain an active license. If they discover you are operating with an expired license, they may lose trust and stop supporting your salon or services, even if they choose not to report you to the TDLR.
At DFW Lash University, we offer TDLR-approved continuing education courses designed to fit your schedule and enhance your skills. Stay compliant, learn something new, and renew with confidence!
