The Importance of Practicing Lash Extensions Using the “Lash on a Log” Method
If you’re a beginner lash artist, mastering the art of lash extensions takes more than theory—it takes practice, patience, and proper technique. Before jumping into live model applications, one of the most effective and affordable ways to practice is by using the “lash on a log” method.
In this blog, we’ll explore why lash on a log is so valuable, what you need to get started, and a simple step-by-step guide to help you develop your isolation, placement, and pickup skills.
💡 What is “Lash on a Log”?
“Lash on a log” is a beginner lash practice technique that involves applying individual lash extensions onto human hair attached to a round object (often a white cup), mimicking the natural curve and positioning of a real eyelid. It helps train your hands and eyes for precision work—without needing a live model.
🔍 Why Practice with Lash on a Log?
Here’s why this method is so important, especially for new lash techs:
Improves Precision: Helps you get used to picking up, dipping, and placing lashes.
Teaches Direction & Placement: You learn how to angle your lashes correctly and avoid stickies.
Affordable & Accessible: No need to invest in a mannequin head or wait for a live model.
Builds Confidence: The more you practice, the more confident you’ll feel during real appointments.
🧰 What You Need:
To create your own lash on a log setup, prepare the following tools:
✅ White cup (preferably round for a natural curve)
✅ Clear tape
✅ Human hair
✅ Lash pick-up tweezers
✅ Lashes on a lash tray
✅ Adhesive of your choice
✅ Lash palette or glue ring

Watch our short lash on a log tutorial here:

Step 1: Set Up the Log
Take a white cup and flip it upside down. Use clear tape to securely attach strands of human hair across the side of the cup in a slightly curved shape—just like a lash line.
🔁 Pro Tip: Place the hairs about 2–3mm apart to mimic natural lash spacing.
Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace
Set up your lash tray, tweezers, and adhesive. Place a glue dot on your palette or glue ring. Make sure your tweezers are clean and your lighting is bright enough for detail work.
Step 3: Pick, Dip, Place
Pick up a lash from your lash tray.
Dip the base into the adhesive.
Carefully place it onto the isolated hair strand. (can be attached from the sides–left or right attachment).
💡 Reminder: Angle is everything! You can angle the cup to be able to have a better view of the bases if they’re attached properly. Make sure that the lashes are upward on a 90-degree angle.
Step 4: Repeat and Practice
Continue practicing with different lash lengths, diameters, and curls. Try spacing out lashes evenly, fanning them out for volume practice, and work on improving your speed and control.
