If you've completed your 320 hours of TDLR-approved lash training, you're almost there — the final step before your official license is passing the TDLR Eyelash Extension Specialist written and practical exams. The good news? Both exams are very passable with the right preparation. This guide breaks down everything that's covered in the official TDLR bulletin, what each exam tests, key terms and concepts you need to know, and how DFW Lash University's Exam Prep Workshop helps program graduates walk in confident and walk out licensed.

1
The Basics

What the TDLR Bulletin Is &
How the Exam Process Works

The TDLR Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB) is the official exam guide published by TDLR and administered through their third-party testing vendor, PSI. It outlines the exam format, what topics are covered, what to bring, and how to schedule. You should read the full bulletin before your exam date — this blog gives you a clear, student-friendly breakdown of what's inside.

1
Complete Your 320 Training Hours
Finish your TDLR-approved lash program. Your school will issue documentation of your completed hours.
2
Pass the Written Exam
The written exam comes before your license application. A score of 70% or higher is required to pass. You'll see your score immediately after finishing the computer-based test at the PSI center.
3
Submit Your TDLR License Application & Pay the $50 License Fee
After passing the written exam, apply online through TDLR's portal and pay the $50 license fee. Once TDLR verifies your eligibility, PSI will email you with instructions to schedule your practical exam.
4
Pass the Practical Exam
Once you pass the practical, you can receive a temporary license at the PSI site the same day. Your official 2-year TDLR license arrives by mail within 21 days.
📌
Pass rate: A score of 70% or higher is required to pass both the written and practical exams. You may retake either exam as many times as needed — but each attempt requires a new fee paid to PSI. Solid preparation means passing on your first try.

Key Terms You Need to Know Cold

These are the exact concepts that consistently appear on the TDLR written exam. Know these before you test:

What is cyanoacrylate?
The main active ingredient found in most eyelash extension adhesives.
What causes lash glue to cure?
Moisture and humidity — water molecules trigger the polymerization of the adhesive.
What are the 3 phases of the lash cycle?
Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), Telogen (resting). Cycle is 30–60 days.
What phase is the last, resting phase?
Telogen — the final resting phase before the lash sheds naturally.
What are demodex mites?
Microscopic mites that burrow into hair follicles and can cause blepharitis, which leads to madarosis (loss of lashes).
What is madarosis?
Loss of eyelashes, often caused by an overpopulation of lash mites (demodex) or other conditions.
What are curved tweezers used for?
To isolate the lash that will receive the extension placement.
What are straight tweezers used for?
To hold side lashes away from the main isolated lash during application.
How far from the root should an extension be placed?
1mm from the root — never touching the eyelid.
How often should you separate lashes?
At least 4 times throughout the service to prevent stickies and bonding of multiple lashes.
What do eye patches do?
Protect the lower lashes from adhesive contact during the application process.
What is Decontamination Method 1?
The process of cleaning first, then disinfecting — a two-step decontamination procedure.
How often is bleach mixed?
Every 24 hours — bleach loses effectiveness after this period and must be freshly prepared.
How many days to report a name or address change to TDLR?
30 days from the date of the change.
When does the TDLR lash license renew?
Every 2 years. CE hours are required at renewal.
What is a consent form?
A written agreement between the client and technician documenting informed consent before services.
What dimension is used for fine natural lashes?
0.10mm — the lightest extension diameter to protect fine, delicate lashes.
What is psoriasis?
A chronic skin condition producing red lesions covered with silvery scales — a potential contraindication.

Eye Shape & Lash Style Mapping

The written exam tests your knowledge of which lash styles best complement each eye shape. These come up repeatedly:

Eye ShapeRecommended Style
Almond eyesLonger extensions in the center of the eye
Round eyesLightweight extensions with less curl
Close-set eyesLonger lengths concentrated at the outer ends
Wide-set eyesLonger extensions in the inner corner
Deep-set eyesOpen and wispy styles with more curl
Protruding eyesSuper natural styles with less drama
Oval faceLooks good with any style
Round faceAdd height by concentrating longer extensions in the center
Square faceOpen-eye styles with longer extensions in the center
💡
First thing to do before any eyelash service? Check for any eye diseases or contraindications. This is one of the most commonly tested protocol questions on the TDLR written exam.
3
Practical Exam

Practical Exam —
What Happens on Test Day

The practical exam is a hands-on skills test administered at a PSI testing center. Examiners evaluate your technique live, checking sanitation procedures, proper setup, isolation, application, and end-of-service protocol. A score of 70% or better is required to pass.

1
Pre-Service Setup & Sanitation
You'll be evaluated on your ability to properly set up your workspace, sanitize tools and surfaces, and demonstrate infection control procedures before touching the client. This is scored — do not skip steps.
2
Client Preparation & Eye Patches
Proper placement of eye patches or tape to protect lower lashes from adhesive. Examiners watch for technique, placement accuracy, and client safety throughout this step.
3
Lash Isolation & Extension Application
Using curved tweezers to isolate individual natural lashes, then applying an extension at the correct distance (1mm from root), correct weight, and correct curl. Proper isolation is one of the most closely watched skills.
4
Separation Checks
During the service, you must separate lashes at least 4 times using a clean spoolie to check for stickies or bonded lashes. Skipping separation rounds is a scored deduction.
5
End-of-Service Disinfection
After completing the service, you'll demonstrate proper post-service disinfection of your station and tools. This section is timed and scored. Leave nothing undone.
🏆
Good news: Students who pass the practical exam can receive a temporary license at the PSI testing site the same day. The temporary license is valid for 21 days while TDLR mails your official two-year Eyelash Extension Specialist License.
